Magnum Force cold air intake by aFe |

Installation for the 5.7 HEMI RAM 1500/2500 By Mark Simonds (MrHemi) Virginia Beach, Virginia One of the quickest and cheapest ways to increase horsepower and torque is to install an aftermarket cold air intake. The stock air management system on most engines is restrictive to say the least, mainly due to all the Federal restrictions placed on vehicle manufacturers. The stock air intake on the 5.7 Hemi consists of an air resonator box (stamped Hemi Magnum), accordion-style plastic tubing, and an enclosed filter box with a very small outside opening to suck air. If you want 20 horsepower and 24 ftlbs of torque gains on your Hemi, and don’t mind losing the “Hemi Magnum” name on top of the engine, then continue reading! The aFe (advance Flow engineering) Magnum Force air intake system arrived on my doorstep last weekend. We finally had a day that was above freezing, so I decided to install the aFe in my driveway. The installation started with the removal of the stock intake… basically everything from the throttle body forward had to go. It’s highly recommended that the negative connection to the battery is disconnected. This will re-set the computer so it will enable it to re-learn the new airflow rate.

The first step is the removal of the plastic tubing, and the air resonator comes off easily with the removal of two bolts. Make sure to remove the orange rubber gasket on the throttle body. The air filter box is next… no bolts, just pull upward and out she comes. |

The aFe instructions are very detailed and accurate, and each step was easy to follow. I started with securing the throttle body tube to the throttle body with the included band clamps and high-quality urethane seal. The “S” pipe was next, which attached to the throttle body pipe with another urethane seal and two more band clamps. Unlike other cold air intakes, aFe uses rubber-isolating mounts to ensure a vibration-free operation. Once the mounting brackets are attached to the factory air box bolt and the front radiator support bolt, connect the brackets to the intake tube. The final step is to attach the 8” blue cone air filter to the end of the tube, again using a band clamp. This is accomplished from underneath the vehicle – don’t even try to wiggle it down from the top. And don’t forget to re-connect the negative on the battery! The actual location of the filter is right between the radiator and passenger side front fender, down low about the same height as the bumper. Great location for fresh cold air and about as far away from the engine as you can get. For scheduled maintenance (filter cleaning), the filter can easily be reached from underneath the truck. You should plan on cleaning the filter every 50 thousand miles or so, unless you drive in extreme dusty or dirty conditions. Also, if you have a 4X4 you need to consider how much mud/dirt/sand will get on the filter since it’s so close to the underneath of the vehicle. |

The benefits of installing an aFe Magnum Force air intake are felt immediately… better throttle response, better sound, and most importantly – proven horsepower and torque gains (dyno results below). This system is much, much better than other aftermarket intakes that use the factory air box, or an air box of their own. There is no comparison using an unrestricted and open filter system. The trick is getting the filter away from the heat of the engine, and providing the best possible airflow through a filter. And aFe has done both. |
